Interesting Victorian graves along
'Ceremonial Way', overgrown areas behind. October 2006: Woodland management carried out, involving thinning and removing some of the self-seeded saplings. This will allow in light which will encourage a more diverse range of plants to grow and allow the original historic trees to survive. January 2007: Work began to make this old Horse Chestnut tree safe. The tree predates the cemetery and was found to be at least 50% dead or dying throughout its crown. In addition there was a vertical crack at the primary fork with signs of fungal attack. On one side, where a major limb was lost many years ago, there was a growing cavity. Unfortunately, the remedial action includes reducing the tree's height by up to 50% then pruning the remaining live wood by about 15% to lift and promote new growth ... we hope this work will save this beautiful special tree and make it safe.
(See notes for 'area AA' which give a view of the completed job March 2007)
