Condition and Restoration Progress Notes |
|
Late 19thC, heavily wooded. Graves
damaged by subsidence and some buried under rubbish thrown over wall
from 20thC upper cemetery area. March 2007: Over the past 4/5 months selected trees (mainly sycamore, including some very large ones) have been removed in areas H,K,O & R along the paths to let in light and encourage diversity. Individual monuments will not be touched but the setting will be more accessible and attractive. Aug 2008: on the lower slopes of this area is the massive Melsom obelisk. It was vandalised many years ago when someone attempted to remove the decorated monumental inscriptions from around its base. Below is view of the monument and the path which has been fenced off in advance of the restoration work required.
